Here Be Dragons!
Dragons are probably the most well known mythical creature. Whether a evil creature selfishly guarding it's lair or a peaceful dragon just wanting to get by in life, there are dragons everywhere.

  What are dragons?
For those of you who don't know what a dragon is or what they look like, here's a quick rundown.

European dragons, (one of the most common), are basically giant lizards with large, leathery wings like a bats. They can be any colour and size, but are usually pretty big.

Dragons also have the ability to breathe fire, which can come in pretty handy. The are intelligent creatures, and the majority are peaceful, with a few power-hungry ones ruining their reputation.

Dragons live in large cave systems or a single massive cave called a lair. While most are primarily carnivores, they hate the taste of humans, and don't eat us, (phew!)

Other Kinds of Dragons
The dragons previously described are European dragons. Other types of dragons include; Chinese or Oriental dragons, wyverns, firedrakes, peist and ying-lung.

Chinese dragons are commonly seen in Chinese celebrations, where a long dragon is made and carried by quite a few people. They are generally longer and thinner than European dragons, and don't have wings.

Wyverns are cousins of dragons. They look generally the same, except they have no legs.

Firedrakes live in caves and guard great hoards of treasure. They can also breathe fire.

Peist are water-dragons of Ireland.

The Ying-Lung is the Chinese winged dragon. According to a Chinese legend, dragons gain wings after 1000 years.

Some Good Dragon Books and Movies
Some books I really enjoyed involving dragons are;
The Dragoncharm books by Graham Edwards, The Immortals series by Tamora Pierce and The Last Dragonlord and Dragon and Pheonix by Joanne Bertin. A good dragon series is the Dragonlance books by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman.

A really good dragon movie is Dragonheart, and it's sequel, Dragonheart; A New Beginning is pretty good too. Another good fantasy movie, though not about dragons, is A Knight's Tale.
